Will Europe's heat wave kill a harvest too?
Shades of 2003 haunts growers
Three weeks ago, I huddled in a cold Paris café, sipping rose and watching cyclists with their baguettes pass undeterred by a misty rain that would only annoy a tourist like me. Today, people in that same city are dying from the heat.
Home now, my thoughts drift to the vineyards I visited, the confidence I heard about an early bud break, and the blissful ignorance of a quickly approaching heat spike that could turn the season around. Concerns for a wine extravagance feels trivial against the backdrop of so many deaths. Spain has counted 212 heat exhaustion fatalities. Forty people in France have drowned jumping into water to escape temperatures of 104-107 degrees.
Only a quarter of French homes have air-conditioning. In Spain and Italy, half. Here in the United States, nearly all structures from mobile homes to libraries are cooled. Even commercial buildings, such as museums and hotels, can’t handle Europe’s heat. The hotel where my wife and I stayed in Annecy couldn’t manage to lower nighttime temps below 78 degrees even though thermostat was set to 65—and the temperatures hadn’t even crested yet when we were there.
For a long time, Europeans have been loath to cool their homes, and there has been something almost principled about that reluctance. It is harder to hold that position when the heat keeps producing body counts. France lost 15,000 people to heat-related illness in 2003, so this year’s spike is not unprecedented.
Modernizing Europe’s infrastructure—the grid, the insulation, the architecture of buildings never meant to be cooled—will take time and money that the continent may now feel it has no choice but to spend.
In the vineyards, that reckoning is already underway. Bordeaux has approved six new heat-resistant varieties for cultivation, touriga nacional among them, a grape native to Portugal with no historic claim to this region whatsoever. The five traditional varieties that built Bordeaux’s reputation over centuries are no longer sufficient on their own. Growers have reoriented their canopy management to cast shade over the clusters, turned their attention toward north-facing slopes, and made irrigation a necessity rather than a last resort.
What 2026 will produce remains to be seen, but 2003 is the cautionary vintage everyone remembers with horror. August temperatures hit 104 degrees, the harvest came weeks early, and Burgundy alone saw yields fall 25 to 30 percent—a decade low. Shriveled grapes gave juice that was tannic and harsh, with seeds that never finished ripening. The red Bordeaux from that year were alcoholic and jammy, their acidity depleted, their character foreign to the terroir. Even the finest Northern Rhône bottles seemed cooked. Merlot-dominant Pomerol and St-Émilion weathered it better, and grenache—heat-tolerant by nature—gave the southern Rhône and Châteauneuf-du-Pape some genuinely fine wines that year. I was pleased with my 2003 CdP selections.
The 2003 whites simply collapsed: heavy, inert, stripped of everything that makes them worth drinking.
A shorter spike, better canopy cover—perhaps 2026 escapes that fate. The growers are hoping so. So am I.
